The author, Lothar Deeg, comes from Bad Mergentheim, Germany, and studied journalism in Munich. When he visited Vladivostok in 1991 he was one of the first foreigners to do so after the city had been reopened. Since 1994 he has been working in St. Petersburg as a German language media correspondent.
