Daisy Miller is an unique beautiful young American woman. Travelling in Europe with her family she meets the American Frederick Winterbourne, who is fascinated by her. Unfortunately she begins an intimate friendship with an urban young Italian and doesn´t observe the respectable and strict behaviour of the Victorian period.
On the surface, Daisy Miller is a simple story of a young American girl’s innocent flirtation with a young Italian and it´s unfortunate consequences.
But Henry James contrasts American customs and values with European manners and morals. Moreover the author gives psychological and social insight. It is an encounter between the values of the Old and New World. Daisy Miller, first published in 1878, is an ideal introduction to the work of one of America’s greatest writers.
