Sehnsucht leads Hannah from her home in Germany to Guernsey where she falls in love with a man she only glimpsed ten years before. She exists in a vacuum of an absentee marriage. Surprisingly she learns the man is still working as the chef of the hotel. The attraction she felt so long ago is all too real and soon both fall deeply in love.
To complicate matters, Hannah also forms a friendship with John, a photographer and writer. They share a platonic, philosophical relationship though Hatem, her lover, warns her that perhaps her friend feels more than he actually should.
Determined to face the inevitable, Hannah returns home to Hannover to end the marriage but learns her husband is hiding a secret and a decision must be made.
